Vehicles and Transportation
Pennsylvania is a state on the move. It has more than 40,000 miles of roads and highways, 6,000 miles of railroad tracks, 127 public airports, 38 public transit systems and 3 major ports.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is responsible for the maintenance and safety of Pennsylvania highways and state roads. Secondary roads are generally managed by cities, townships and boroughs. The commonwealth also operates the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a 530 mile toll highway spanning the state.
